“Deborah C. Smith is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter with soulful Americana roots who’s songs give us permission to feel.” - Shout Magazine
Deborah writes and performs on acoustic guitar and piano, both solo and with her band, the Golden Era, incorporating bass, drums, and electric guitar. Additionally, she plays and sings with the Woodstock-area collective the Rusk Mountain Ramblers. Deborah has been writing songs for over 20 years, has released 2 full-length studio albums and has toured the US, France and Spain as a solo act.
Deborah is a member of the Songwriters Guild of America, was featured in 2019 at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival as an Emerging Artist and coaches an annual songwriting workshop called Now Hear This, currently in it's 8th year.
Music education began at an early age with the study and performance of traditional Irish and contemporary rhythm tap dance. She performed and competed in rhythm tap ensembles throughout the North East, as well as the New York State and World Fairs.
Growing up, sounds in the home were a blend of jazz piano and outlaw country. Multiply that by being adolescent during the 80’s while pop dance culture was erupting and you get a rich landscape of American music as influence.
Deborah studyied the craft of songwriting as an undergrad at SUNY Geneseo, while working within the musical theater program, creating new original songs for theater performances. There she learned the nuances of how a song can tell a story and was awarded the Robert Sinclair Prize for Excellence in Writing and Directing.
At age 22, Deborah moved to New York City to pursue a dream of working as a musician, playing in the bars and clubs in Greenwich Village. She lived in Brooklyn for 22 years and has recently relocated to the Catskill mountains where she lives, plays and performs with her drummer husband, Doug Cox.
She has written songs for film, live theater, two full-length rock operas and dozens of improv comedy shows. She has toured throughout the US and abroad, most recently in Spain and the South of France, continues to play for international audiences, through her travels.
Deborah is currently writing and recording a new album of original songs, slated for release in Fall 2024.
Her most recent album, Hearing In the Bardo, is streaming on all major music sites.
